MAHSURI MEMORIAL COMPLEX

Mahsuri memorial complex in kampong mawat, ulu Melaka, attempts to recreate and celebrate the life and times of mahsuri. The place exhibits replicas of wooden houses that could have been in use during her days. The main house, built high on wooden stilts displays a small bedroom, an enclosed veranda with low windows and a Spartan kitchen. A group of women living around today’s kampong mawat would gather in the house during certain time of the week to perform traditional songs. Also built within the complex is the sprawling replica of the Balai Indera Makam Segar, which is the house in which datuk karma jaya, who ordered the execution, used to live. There are also Mahsuri’s tomb and Mahsuri well. Here is the best place to know and gain more informations regarding the legend of Mahsuri. Here I included a video that shows several areas around Mahsuri Memorial Complex.

WHO IS WAN AISHAH?

Wan Aishah Wan Nawawi

The first seventh-generation descendant of Mahsuri is Sirintra Yayee, whose Muslim name is Wan Aishah. She was discovered as a child when the Kedah Historical Society confirmed her as the seventh-generation of descendant of Mahsuri. Coincidence or not, one of the siblings who are of the seventh-generation descendants, is a beautiful 27 year old woman(at 2016) named Wan Aishah Nawawi who bears a striking resemblance to Mahsuri as depicited in a portrait painted quite some time ago. The family has since returned to Phuket as they have not yet been able to make the all-important decision of becoming Malaysian citizens and resetting in Langkawi.

THE UNBEARABLE PAINS

The situation during penalty
During the penalty, mahsuri was tied to a tree. She pleaded her innocence but no one was put trust on her, or rather, her enemies wanted her to die. When they stabbed her with a sacred “keris” or dagger, the villagers seeing white blood flowed out from her wound. Others maintain there was the sudden appearance of white mist that enveloped the spot where she was executed. This in the village belief, was a sign of her innocence. With her dying breath, Mahsuri laid a curse on langkawi that the island will be laid waste for the next seventh generations. This tragedy had opened the eyes of the villagers.

THE HIDDEN TRUTH OF THE CURSE

The curse

“For this act of injustice Langkawi shall not prosper for seven generations to come”. Mahsuri is best remembered for her curse on Langkawi which was uttered before she died. The execution of Mahsuri was on deed a tragedy of dramatic proportions and her curse? Myth legend or fantasy? History tells that within a few years of Mahsuri death, Langkawi was devastated by the Siamese and Datuk Kerma Jaya and his whole family were killed. Rice fields and Graneries were completely set on fire. Nowadays, grains that appear to be burned rice grains are still to be found at Padang Matsirat.

HERE BEGINS THE STORY

Mahsuri was married to Mat Deris who is a warrior. Due to the war, Mat Deris should leave Mahsuri alone and go to war. During Wan Darus absence, the story teller came to the village and befriended with Mahsuri. This is an opportunity to Mahura who is Mahsuri’s mother-in-law to accuse. Mahsuri was accused of committing adultery. This rumor had spread as fast as lightning to the villagers. Due to what had happened, as the penalty Mahsuri was being sentenced to death without any trial by Datuk Karma Jaya. Mahsuri tried to denied but it is unnacceptabled.

UNPARALLELED BEAUTY OF LANGKAWI PRINCESS

Based on a famous legend in the 14th century, Langkawi had an unparalleled beautiful princess named Mahsuri. Mahsuri’s beauty made her became famous and well known in Langkawi Island and the nearby area. Her beauty also made her became the heartrob of the entire island. A lot of men wanted to marry Mahsuri. Due to her beauty, the chief of the village, Karma Jaya also wanted to marry her but his existing wife, Mahura did not give a permission to him. Finally Mahsuri fell in love and married with Wan Darus who is Karma Jaya’s brother. I found this story is interesting since it is related with each other.
